Payslip vs Pay Stub: Key Differences Explained
Payslip and pay stub refer to the same document — a statement of earnings and deductions. The difference is primarily geographical and terminological, though there are some format and legal distinctions.
Terminology by Region
"Payslip" is used in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and many Commonwealth countries. "Pay stub" (or "paycheck stub") is the American English term. "Salary slip" is common in India, Pakistan, and parts of South-East Asia.
Legal Differences
The key legal difference is not the name but the requirements. UK payslips must be itemised (Employment Rights Act 1996). US pay stub requirements vary by state — some states mandate them, others don’t.
Format Differences
UK payslips typically show NI number and tax code. US pay stubs show SSN (last 4), filing status, and state/federal tax separately. Indian salary slips show CTC breakdown, PF/ESI details, and PAN.
